The Crofton Salutes Our Heroes banners along Crofton Parkway was a Crofton 60th Anniversary Program honoring veterans and individuals actively serving in the US Army, US Airforce, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Space Force, and US Coast Guard. This page tells the stories of most of those veterans and service members. Click on any of the pictures below to learn more about one of Crofton's Heroes.

![Elroy (Roy) Soluri, Sr. was born in Cornwall, New York on September 20, 1940. He was raised in Highland Falls, New York, graduating from Highland Falls High School in 1958. In 1962 he graduated from the New York State Maritime College (SUNY) located in Throggs Neck, NY and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy in June of that year. Roy served as a navigator on various destroyers and other service vessels for more than 20 years. He is a Vietnam veteran having served withThe Brown Water Navy and was awarded the Bronze Star with V for his service. In 1971, Roy graduated from the US Navy Postgraduate School earning a master’s degree in Oceanography.
Roy married Alice Soluri (nee Kolassa) in 1963 and they began their Navy life, living in various Navy towns. Roy, Alice and their 3 children - Elroy Jr, Patricia and Susan - moved to Crofton in 1972 when he was stationed at the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) in Suitland, MD. In 1977 Roy was stationed at the US Naval Academy where he taught Oceanography. He loved teaching and was an avid Navy Football fan and season ticket for holder for over 40 years.
After retiring from the Navy in 1982 Roy briefly taught science at Martin Spaulding High School before returning to DMA. During his 20 year second career at DMA he served as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Radio Communications Search and Rescue working with the International Hydrographic Organization headquartered in Monaco.
During his more than 50 years in Crofton he was active in the community and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish, working with the youth and establishing the Community “Winter Relief” program which houses men who are homeless at Seton Parish. He was a volunteer at several Catholic Charities and at Anne Arundel County Medical Center.
